Rescuing children from the streets of Uganda

Our mission

Umoya Ministries is working to rescue children from the streets of Uganda. We rescue, rehabilitate and reconcile street-connected children with their families. We have a strong belief in the right for all children to have access to an education and a safe place to call home so they grow to reach their full potential.

We work to advocate for children to be protected from all forms of abuse and exploitation.

Help us to raise funds to provide food packages for our families and children in Uganda over Christmas.

We rescue, rehabilitate and reconcile street-connected children with their families.

More than 15,000 children, aged between 7 and 14, live in Kampala's streets. No child should be forced to live on the street or endure abuse.

Children living on the street are subject to a lack of access to adequate nutrition, water, basic hygiene and basic services such as medical care and education.  They are vunerable to violent interference by police, exploitation, and unsafe sexual practices – which can lead to sexually transmitted infections – including HIV. Children living on the streets face a negative stigma in the local community and are often involved in substance abuse which places their health and development at great risk.

Outreach

We do regular outreaches in the local community. Outreach enables us to build relationships and trust with children living on the street and helps us to recognise those who are willing to leave street life behind.

We ensure that each child we rescue from the street and resettle at home has access to an education including school fees, books, uniforms, travel costs and meals at school.

Providing an education

The best solution to getting children off the street long term is to focus on rehabilitation and reconciliation with existing family members. A strong focus on educating children is needed and the strengthening of support to families. Children are best kept in their immediate family or placed into a loving home with a close relative or a foster family.
